In Arizona, Regulated Medical Waste or Biohazardous Medical Waste is taken to treatment facilities where the RMW is treated via Autoclave Technology. This process uses a combination of steam and pressure to inactivate the hazards associated with Blood and Bodily Fluids typically found in Biomedical Waste. The treated waste is then transported to a landfill where it then disposed of.
Medical Waste Incineration is the most common form of Disposal for Regulated Medical Waste in the United States. Over 90% of all Biohazardous Medical Waste is shipped across the country and the world to incineration plants for destruction. The ash that is created is then repurposed into concrete, or put into landfills as a hard pack material helping with composition and breakdown of other organic materials.
Arizona has a few Alternative Medical Waste Treatment Plants that provide different services not commonly used. These processes are effective however not all Regulated Medical Waste can be disposed of using these plants. Some of these treatment facilities still require additional disposal such as incineration after Medical Sharps are Shredded.
